David Gardener is a Lecturer in the School of Design at Northumbria University, Newcastle. He holds an MA in Art (2002) and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA, 2015). His research focuses on graphic design history, branding strategies, and post-war visual culture, with notable work on Second World War advertising and the films of Jaques Tati. He has been awarded six international D&AD lecturer awards and actively contributes to academic peer review and editorial roles. Currently, he co-runs the BINUS Fashion and Graphic Design Degree in Indonesia and is pursuing a PhD in Branding and Conflict. Prior to academia, he worked as a medical illustrator and graphic designer, later transitioning to lecturing in New Zealand before returning to the UK in 2011.
Research interests include the intersection of design with historical and cultural contexts, as well as pedagogical innovations in design education. His publications explore visual design principles, branding in conflict, and interdisciplinary approaches to creative practice. He has served as an external examiner and maintains ties with international academic communities.
