Dr. David García León is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities and Languages at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in Saint John. His research focuses on language ideologies, gender studies, queer theory, and disability representation in Latin American media. He holds a PhD and has taught at UNB since 2024, previously serving as Assistant Professor at Maynooth University (2020–2023) and a Visiting Scholar at the University of Toronto (2019–2020).
His research explores how power structures are (re)produced through language, particularly in Colombian media. Notable projects include analyzing male disability representation in media and the intersection of race, language, and policy. He has published extensively in journals like Latin American Research Review and Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, and edited the Spanish Journal of Applied Linguistics (2018–2024).
Recognition includes the 2020 Teaching Hero Award and shortlisting for Maynooth University's Teaching Excellence Award. His work bridges queer linguistics, critical disability studies, and decolonial methodologies, often employing critical discourse analysis.
Teaching specialties include Spanish/French language instruction, sociolinguistics, and Latin American culture. He has co-authored works on intersexuality in Colombian jurisprudence and bilingual education policies, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to language and society.
