Francia Martinez

Francia Martinez, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Spanish at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. She holds affiliations with the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters and the Department of Language, Culture, and the Arts. Born in Cali, Colombia, she earned her B.A. in Foreign Language Education (2003) from Universidad del Valle, and her M.A. (Latin American Literature) and Ph.D. (Spanish Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition) from the University of Alabama (2009). She previously served as Visiting Assistant Professor and Spanish Language Program Director at Ohio University.

Her research focuses on sociolinguistics, particularly linguistic landscapes of Hispanic communities in Michigan (Detroit and Dearborn) and Colombia. She examines cultural identity dynamics among Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Colombian populations, as well as multilingualism in urban settings.
