David Gann is a Professor of Innovation & Entrepreneurship at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, and holds concurrent roles as a Fellow at Magdalen College and an Associate of the University of Oxford China Centre. He previously served as Vice-President (Innovation) at Imperial College London (2013–2019) and currently leads as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Development and External Affairs at Oxford. His professional engagements include directorships at the UK Atomic Energy Authority, Directa Plus plc, and VenCap International plc, alongside chairing LSO Live for the London Symphony Orchestra.
David holds a PhD in Industrial Economics and is a Chartered Civil Engineer. He has been recognized with prestigious titles such as CBE (2010) and the Imperial College Medal (2019), and his work bridges academia with industry through strategic innovation advisory roles in government and corporate sectors.
His research focuses on innovation ecosystems, megaproject management, and the governance of philanthropy. Key themes include how innovation transforms economies and societies, the role of open innovation in technology sectors, and challenges in sustainable infrastructure. He has extensively studied global tech firms like Huawei and megaprojects such as Crossrail and Heathrow Terminal 5, emphasizing systems integration and strategic flexibility.
David chairs the UK Government’s Innovation Expert Group and previously advised the Department of Health & Social Care’s Technology Advisory Board. His recent work highlights critical minerals in green transitions and the strategic dynamics of innovation in China, reflecting his global perspective on technological and economic development.
