Dr. Fleming's research explores the complex intersections of film philosophy, global cinema, and contemporary technological developments. His work spans critical race theory, environmental humanities, and the philosophy of technology, with particular focus on digital cinema, AI filmmaking, and the relationship between screen media and urban environments. He has pioneered 'fractalactic' and 'gonzo' film-philosophy methods, increasingly utilizing the video-essay format as both research tool and creative output. His scholarship examines science fiction cinema, non-neurotypical thought and image, cinema and ecology, and media and animal studies, with attention to how landmark thinkers engage with screen media.
His recent publications reveal a trajectory toward increasingly interdisciplinary and politically engaged scholarship that bridges film studies with critical race theory, posthumanism, and ecological thought. The 2025 publications particularly demonstrate his focus on Chinese film philosophy and the racial dimensions of streaming media in the Anthropocene era. His work consistently challenges conventional boundaries between film theory, philosophy, and cultural studies while maintaining a strong commitment to decolonizing approaches to global screen media.
Dr. Fleming actively contributes to academic discourse through his role on the editorial board of the open access journal Film-Philosophy and as Book Series Editor for Screens, Thinking, Worlds. He has served as External Examiner for King's College London's Media Communications and Creative Industries BA program and as External Academic Specialist for the University of Dundee's English/Creative Writing/Film programme review.
As Film and Media BA Programme Director at Stirling, he coordinates core modules including Reading Film & Television and teaches the research-led elective Global Film as/and Philosophy. He also guest lectures on Screening Science Fiction, Key Feminist Thinkers, and Small Nations on Screen. From 2021, he led the Scottish Graduate School of Arts and Humanities 'Discipline + Catalyst' initiative for Media, Communications, Film & TV, serving all doctoral researchers across Scotland. He welcomes MRes and PhD applications focusing on Film and Media Philosophy themes and is scheduled for a Visiting Scholar position at the University of British Columbia (December 2025) and a Short-Term Residency at NOVA University of Lisbon (2026) for the ERC-funded FILM AND DEATH project.
Dr. Fleming is actively involved with research networks including Network Precarity, the Posthuman Research Institute, the Multispecies Storytelling Network, and the Cinematic Thinking Network. His current collaborative projects examine raced and gendered machines in AI culture, cinema and urbanity in China (with Simon Harrison), and Media Worlds and Pollution (with Clifton Evers).
