David Eastwood is a Lecturer in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Manchester, based at Diamond Light Source in Oxfordshire. He holds a PhD from Durham University (2010) in X-ray scattering from thin film nanostructures. His research focuses on X-ray imaging and synchrotron techniques for analyzing reactive materials (e.g., batteries, catalysts) and airborne particles (aerosols, particulate matter). He leads the University of Manchester at Harwell's collaboration with Diamond and is part of the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering.
Teaching responsibilities include lecturing on Data Acquisition and Experimental Methods (MECH21342) and supervising projects across multiple years. He currently co-supervises PhD student Matthew Jones with Professors Sarah Haigh and Chris Hardacre, supported by Johnson Matthey. His awards include a 2022 Fellowship and 2016 Associate Fellowship from Advance HE.
Research interests span X-ray tomography, energy storage materials, and nanofabrication. Notable contributions include cover features in Advanced Energy Materials and Chemical Communications, and projects like the UoMaH collaboration exploring nanoparticle behavior in thermoplastics. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to clean energy and environmental sustainability.
