David E. Wellbery serves as the LeRoy T. and Margaret Deffenbaugh Carlson University Professor in the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Chicago's Division of the Humanities. With a Ph.D. from Yale University (1977), he has held positions at Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Chicago since 2001.
His research focuses on the Age of Goethe and German Idealism, exploring intersections between literature and philosophy, aesthetics, narratology, and the theory of form. Wellbery investigates Goethe's legacy, the thought of tragedy, and Schopenhauer's influence on modernist literature through authors like Nietzsche, Kafka, and Beckett.
His recent scholarly output shows consistent engagement with Goethe studies (2016-2020), German literary history (2019), and critical editions of canonical texts. The publications demonstrate deep specialization in hermeneutics, semiotics, and aesthetic theory spanning Enlightenment to modern periods.
