David Dowling is a tenured Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, College of Engineering. His research focuses on underwater acoustics, hydrodynamics, structural acoustics, and fluid mechanics. He has received international recognition for his contributions to acoustics and fluid mechanics, including fellowships from ASME and ASA, and multiple teaching and mentoring awards.
- Education:
- Ph.D., Aeronautics, California Institute of Technology, 1988
- M.S., Aeronautics, California Institute of Technology, 1983
- B.S., Applied Physics, California Institute of Technology, 1982
Dowling's research explores the intersection of acoustic fields and fluid dynamics, with applications in sonar signal analysis and oceanography. His work has been featured in publications such as the American Association of Physics Teachers' Journal, and he has contributed to the fifth edition of the textbook Fluid Mechanics.
Scientific Awards & Honors:
- ASME Per Bruel Gold Medal for Noise Control and Acoustics (2021)
- Elected member of the ASA Executive Council (2020)
- Selected as Fellow by both ASME (2010) and ASA (2002)
- Education Excellence Award (2009) and Outstanding Professor Award (2009)
- Multiple swimming competition medals (2004-2005)
Dowling has mentored numerous graduate students, including Brian Worthmann (Gallery of Acoustics winner, 2017), Flynn (NDSEG Fellow, 2016), and Adaleena Mookerjee (Best Paper Award, 2014). He also co-authored the textbook Fluid Mechanics (fifth edition, 2011).
