David Domeij is a Professor and former Head of the Department of Economics at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE). He holds the Eva and Mats Qviberg Chair in Economics. His research focuses on macroeconomic policy, fiscal and monetary systems, wealth inequality, and labor supply dynamics. Domeij earned his PhD in Economics from Northwestern University (1998).
His work bridges theoretical models with empirical applications, addressing topics like the impact of childcare subsidies on labor participation (notably in Germany), demographic shifts influencing global capital flows, and the design of social insurance systems to mitigate asymmetric business-cycle risks. Notable contributions include analysis of public debt bubbles and their fiscal policy implications, as well as Sweden's wealth inequality trends since the 1970s.
He has published in top journals such as the American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics, Econometrica, and the Review of Economic Studies. His 2019 paper on public sector employment and skill premiums was selected as the Scandinavian Journal of Economics' best paper. Domeij also contributes to policy debates through executive education and media commentary on crises and fiscal strategies.
