David Dolan is a Professor of classical improvisation at Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London and Head of the Centre for Creative Performance & Classical Improvisation. He holds visiting professorships at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Sibelius Academy (Helsinki), collaborating with institutions like Imperial College London and Tokyo Institute of Technology. His work focuses on reviving classical improvisation within Western art-music performance, combining empirical research with pedagogical innovation.
Education: Studied piano with Sonia Valin (Jerusalem Academy), Leon Fleisher (Peabody Conservatory), and Claude Frank, alongside composition/improvisation under Haim Alexander. Completed a PhD analyzing parallels between speech prosody and musical improvisation.
Research Interests: Interdisciplinary studies on improvisation’s impact on performer-audience communication, neuroscience of music performance, historical performance practices, and pedagogical methodology. Collaborates with music psychologists and neuroscientists to explore improvisation’s cognitive and physiological effects.
Notable Awards: Senior Fellow of the British Advanced Higher Education Academy.
Grants & Collaborations: Works with Imperial College’s Neuroscience team (Prof. Henrik Jensen) and Tokyo Institute of Technology. Research includes multiscale synchronization dynamics in performance and AI-driven musical creativity.
