Sonia Leong is an Associate Professor of Practice and Program Director of Piano at the University of the Pacific. She holds a BM from the University of British Columbia, an MM from the Peabody Conservatory of Music, and a DM from the University of Montreal. She completed a Concert Recital Diploma at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London on a Commonwealth Scholarship.
Her research interests focus on classical piano performance, chamber music collaboration, and pedagogical approaches to music education. As a founding member of Trio 180 since 2002, she has commissioned works from composers such as Chen Yi and Robert Greenberg, releasing albums like the 2015 Dvořák/Suk/Schumann collection. She also collaborates with violinist Ann Miller (2015 Perspectives on Light and Shadow) and bassoonist Nicolasa Kuster (Metamorphosis, 2013).
Critics praise her 'richly colorful and tender playing' (St. Galler Tagblatt) and 'sensitive and accomplished touch' (San Francisco Classical Voice). Her performances span solo and orchestral engagements across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Leong actively participates in music festivals including Banff, Orford, Scotia, and Ernen (under György Sebök). Her pedagogical work emphasizes nurturing young musicians through masterclasses and ensemble training.
