David Crider is an Assistant Professor in the Communication Studies department at SUNY Oswego since 2014. He holds a Ph.D. in Media & Communication from Temple University (2014), an MA in Media Studies from Syracuse University (2009), and a BA in Mass Communications from Susquehanna University (2000). Prior to academia, he worked in radio for over a decade, holding roles like on-air personality and program director.
His research focuses on radio/audio media's role in identity presentation, gender representation in radio formats, and broadcast localism. Notable works include studies on pandemic-era local radio, gender dynamics in music radio, and the historical development of freeform radio.
Crider has received multiple awards including the 2024 and 2019 BEA Top Open Paper Awards, and consecutive teaching excellence awards from SUNY Oswego's Residence Hall Association. He actively presents at conferences like BEA and NPCA/ACA, and publishes in journals like Radio Journal and Popular Music and Society.
He teaches courses in Media Management, Mass Media, Radio Production, and Student Media Leadership. His courses emphasize practical skills while connecting to broader media industry trends and theoretical concepts.
