معرفی
Professor David Craik is a Group Leader and UQ Laureate Fellow at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB), University of Queensland. He also directs the ARC Centre of Excellence for Innovations in Peptide and Protein Science and the Ramaciotti Facility for Producing Pharmaceuticals in Plants. His research focuses on cyclic peptides, particularly cyclotides, which are ultra-stable plant-derived molecules with applications in drug design, agriculture, and biotechnology. Key achievements include developing orally active peptide drugs, creating the world’s first eco-friendly insecticide (Sero-X), and pioneering plant-based production of medicines.
Research Interests
Professor Craik’s work spans cyclotide discovery, peptide engineering, and plant-based drug production. His lab investigates how cyclotides can be grafted with bioactive peptides for treating diseases like cancer and chronic pain. Projects include designing insecticidal peptides, optimizing conotoxins (from cone snails) for pain management, and engineering plants to produce therapeutic compounds. His research bridges fundamental biology, chemistry, and applied biotechnology, with a focus on low-cost, sustainable drug solutions.
Collaborations & Impact
His global collaborations span over 16 countries, including partnerships with La Trobe University (Australia), Hainan University (China), and institutions in Brazil, Germany, and the U.S. Industry collaborations with Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Innovate Ag have translated research into commercial applications. Notable awards include the King’s Birthday Award for pioneering plant-grown medicines.
Lab & Team
His lab includes researchers like Dr. Sonia Henriques and Dr. Conan Wang, along with a cohort of PhD students and postdocs. Current projects target cancer therapeutics, painkillers, and sustainable agricultural chemicals. The lab emphasizes interdisciplinary training, offering opportunities in structural biology, peptide synthesis, and plant biotechnology.
