David Cowling is Professor of French in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at Durham University and member of the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies. His research applies cognitive metaphor theory to late medieval and early modern French texts, particularly analyzing political discourse and linguistic borrowing controversies. He currently prepares a scholarly edition of George Chastelain's chronicle.
Having served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Arts and Humanities) and Head of School, Cowling led initiatives including the Durham Residential Research Library development. His publications examine metaphors of economic exchange in Renaissance linguistic debates and the reception of classical authors.
