David Church is Deputy Principal at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), holding the rank of Clinical Professor. His expertise centers on endocrine disorders in companion animals, particularly diabetes mellitus in dogs and cats. He completed his veterinary degree at the University of Sydney, followed by a PhD in diabetes pathophysiology. Previously, he was Chair of Small Animal Studies and Head of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at RVC, expanding it into a globally leading clinical department.
Key research interests include insulin resistance mechanisms, hyperadrenocorticism management, and leveraging veterinary practice 'big data' for translational medicine and animal welfare improvements. He leads the VetCompass program analyzing UK companion animal health trends, focusing on breed-specific disorders, antimicrobial stewardship, and causal inference methods in veterinary epidemiology.
He has authored over 150 scientific articles and co-edited major textbooks like *Small Animal Clinical Pharmacology*. Current projects include evaluating antimicrobial usage patterns and improving diagnostic approaches for canine adrenal disorders. His clinical work spans 30+ years as a specialist in small animal internal medicine, emphasizing problem-oriented diagnostic strategies.
David collaborates extensively with the Kennel Club and Dogs Trust on canine health initiatives. He advocates for evidence-based veterinary practices through continuing education programs and has pioneered causal inference methodologies using EPR data to assess clinical intervention efficacy.
