Dr. David Champlin is an Associate Professor of Biology and Department Chair in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Southern Maine (USM). He joined USM in 2001 after a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Washington. His research focuses on hormonal regulation of development using insect metamorphosis as a model system, particularly examining how ecdysteroid hormones control gene expression and cell proliferation.
Dr. Champlin holds a PhD in Biochemistry from Cornell University and a BA in Biology and Psychology from St. Olaf College. He teaches courses including BIO 105/106 (Introductory Biology), BIO 305/306 (Developmental Biology), BIO 409/509/410/510 (Cell and Molecular Biology), and BIO 407/507 (Environmental Modulation of Developmental Mechanisms).
His lab investigates molecular mechanisms of hormonal control in development, employing techniques such as gene expression analysis and immunohistochemistry. The team includes graduate students, undergraduates, and high school students. Current research emphasizes understanding how ecdysteroid regulates cell proliferation during metamorphosis.
