David Carter is an Assistant Professor of Music at The University of Tulsa within the Kendall College of Arts & Sciences, Department of Music. He teaches clarinet, saxophone, music history, symphonic literature, and woodwind methods while serving as principal clarinetist for both the Tulsa Symphony and Tulsa Opera Orchestra.
His educational credentials include:
- DMA from the University of Oklahoma (Dissertation: “Corigliano’s Clarinet Concerto: The Clarinetist’s View”)
- MM from The Ohio State University
- BM from the University of North Texas
- Graduate Certificate in Orchestral Studies from Wayne State University
Carter specializes in clarinet pedagogy and performance with emphasis on technical development and repertoire expansion. His work integrates academic instruction with professional orchestral practice, focusing on historical context and contemporary applications of woodwind techniques across diverse musical settings.
As a performer, Carter co-founded Duo Avanzando with percussionist Ricardo Coelho de Souza and serves on the artist faculty at Montana's Red Lodge Music Festival. His orchestral career spans the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Belém Festival Orchestra (Brazil), Orquesta Sinfónica de la UANL (Mexico), and Detroit Symphony, with masterclasses presented across Brazil, China, Puerto Rico, and the United States. Carter is a Selmer Paris Artist performing exclusively on Privilege clarinets.
