David Carey Jr. is a Professor of History and Women and Gender Studies at the University of Southern Maine. His work focuses on Latin American history with a particular emphasis on indigenous communities, gender, and oral history. He has authored and edited multiple books, including Health in The Highlands (2023), Oral History in Latin America (2017), and I Ask for Justice (2013), which received the LASA Bryce Wood Book Award.
His research explores themes such as Maya women’s agency, colonial and postcolonial health systems, and the role of alcohol in Guatemalan society. He has been supported by prestigious grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, Fulbright, and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. Dr. Carey also serves as an expert witness for Guatemalan asylum seekers, bridging academic research with advocacy.
Teaching includes courses on Latin American history, gender studies, environmental history, and crime in El Salvador. His interdisciplinary approach integrates oral histories, archival work, and ethnographic methods to center marginalized voices in historical narratives.
