David M. Carballo is a Professor at Boston University's College of Arts & Sciences, affiliated with the Archaeology Program, Center for Latin American Studies, Center for Innovation in Social Science, and Initiative on Cities. His research focuses on Mesoamerican archaeology, particularly urbanism, collective action, and ancient central Mexican civilizations. He leads the Tlajinga-Teotihuacan Project, exploring non-elite neighborhoods in Teotihuacan. His work emphasizes community engagement and interdisciplinary methods, including GIS and archaeometry.
Research interests include households, ritual practices, craft production, and political governance. He has conducted fieldwork across the Americas, with recent projects in Teotihuacan and Tlaxcala. His publications address urbanization, collective action theory, and the intersection of religion and power in ancient societies. Courses taught include 'Archaeology of Cities' and 'Aztec, Maya, and their Predecessors.'
Notable works include Collision of Worlds: A Deep History of the Fall of Aztec Mexico and the Forging of New Spain (2020) and edited volumes like Teotihuacan: The World Beyond the City (2020).
