David Calder is a Senior Lecturer in Theatre & Performance Studies at the Department of Drama, University of Manchester. His research explores the intersections of performance, public space, and political theory, with a focus on queer approaches to spatial politics and European urban redevelopment. He holds a PhD from Northwestern University (2014) and a BA in French from Trinity College, Hartford. Calder’s work has been recognized with awards including the TDR Essay Prize (2012) and the QuietManDave Prize (2020).
His current research examines queer performances of public space in 21st-century Europe, analyzing how theatrical events and infrastructures shape contested notions of the public sphere amid debates over sovereignty, migration, and austerity. This project builds on his earlier work on French street theatre, detailed in his Open Access book Street Theatre and the Production of Postindustrial Space: Working Memories (2019).
