David C. Martin is the Karl W. and Renate Böer Chaired Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Delaware, within the College of Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research focuses on organic molecular semiconductors, conductive polymer films, and biocompatible materials for biomedical applications, including neural prosthetics and biosensors. He has pioneered studies on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) for interfacing electronics with living tissue, emphasizing biomaterials, nanotechnology, and high-resolution electron microscopy.
- Affiliations: Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Delaware
- Education: Ph.D. (Polymer Science & Engineering), University of Massachusetts Amherst
Research interests span optoelectronic polymers, conductive coatings for medical devices, and nanoscale polymer structures. He has developed novel methods for in situ polymerization of PEDOT in biological tissues and advanced electron microscopy techniques for polymer characterization.
Key achievements include over 200 publications, major awards like the NSF Young Investigator Award (1992), and leadership roles such as President of the Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering Division (ACS, 2013). His work bridges materials science and biomedical engineering, with applications in neural interfaces, biosensors, and regenerative medicine.
Grants & Awards: NSF grants, Karl W. Böer Chair (2009), AIMBE Fellowship (2005), and recognition for teaching excellence.
Labs/Teams: Research Group focuses on conductive polymers, biomaterials, and nanotechnology for biomedical applications. Collaborations span academia and industry, advancing materials for next-generation bioelectronics.
