David Hoagland

David Hoagland is Professor in the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research examines structure and dynamics in soft materials like solutions, gels, and suspensions using experimental methods including electron microscopy, single-molecule visualization, and light scattering.

Current projects focus on polyelectrolytes, polymers in ionic liquids, dynamics of confined polymers, carbon nanotube membranes, and interfacial nanoparticle assembly. His group has pioneered electron microscopy techniques for imaging solvated polymeric materials by leveraging the nonvolatility of ionic liquids.

Honors include fellowship in the American Physical Society, the OMNOVA Solutions Foundation Award, and IBM Faculty Development Award.

The Hoagland Research Group explores fundamental behaviors of polymers at nanoscale dimensions, with applications ranging from protein storage to concrete curing.
