David Bourchier is an Associate Professor and Adjunct Associate Professor at The University of Western Australia's School of Social Sciences, specializing in Asian Studies. He holds a BA from Flinders and Murdoch Universities and a PhD from Monash University. His research focuses on Indonesian politics, history, and sociocultural dynamics, with particular emphasis on ideological contestation, legal frameworks, and post-authoritarian governance. He has taught at multiple institutions including UWA since 1998, where he contributes to courses on Indonesian language and Southeast Asian studies.
Research Interests: His work examines Indonesian political ideology, the role of adat traditions, legal thought, and military history. Recent projects include studies on Islamic creationism and the evolution of religious nationalism in post-authoritarian Indonesia. Key publications include Illiberal Democracy in Indonesia (2015) and contributions to The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Political Theory.
Awards: Recipient of the Journal of Contemporary Asia Prize (2019) and Excellence in Teaching Award (2018). His research has been cited over 1,100 times, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to peaceful societies and quality education.
