معرفی
David Bennett is a Professor in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Alberta, with adjunct status in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. His work centers on spinal cord injury mechanisms and therapeutic interventions.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1990)
- Honours B.Eng. in Electrical Engineering from McGill University (1984)
Dr. Bennett's research investigates neuronal channel/receptor changes below spinal cord injury sites using human and animal models. His lab pioneers optogenetic and pharmacological strategies to restore locomotor function and manage spasticity, directly translating findings to clinical rehabilitation. Current work emphasizes enhancing walking recovery through neural compensation techniques.
Scientific Awards:
- Barbara Turnbull Award for Spinal Cord Research (awarded 2004 and 2009 by CIHR/NeuroScience Canada)
- Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Scientist (1996-2014)
Dr. Bennett actively mentors graduate students through the Spinal Cord Injury Research Group at the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute, with current recruitment for PhD positions. His sustained funding from major awards supports translational neurorehabilitation research.
The Bennett Lab operates within the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute's Heritage Medical Research Centre, collaborating on multidisciplinary approaches to spinal cord repair.
