David Belnap serves as a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Utah and directs the Electron Microscopy Core Laboratory (HSC Cores), providing advanced imaging services to university researchers. His work is central to structural biology initiatives across campus.
His research specializes in the structural analysis of viruses and cellular macromolecules using cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and 3D reconstruction techniques. Key focus areas include virus cell-entry mechanisms, assembly/disassembly processes, and viral evolution. He actively develops improved cryo-EM methodologies to enhance imaging resolution and throughput for complex biological systems.
Through the Electron Microscopy Core Laboratory, Dr. Belnap collaborates extensively with research teams university-wide, enabling high-resolution visualization of viral structures and macromolecular complexes. His facility supports diverse projects in structural virology and contributes to advancing imaging technologies in biological research.
