David Bard-Schwarz is a Professor of Music Theory at the University of North Texas College of Music, specializing in interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of music, psychoanalysis, and cultural theory. He holds a Ph.D. in Music Theory from the University of Texas at Austin (1987), an MPS in Interactive Telecommunications from New York University (2001), and prior degrees from Indiana University and the University of Virginia.
His research integrates music theory with psychoanalytic frameworks, focusing on works by composers like John Adams, Franz Schubert, and contemporary electronic artists. Key publications include Listening Subjects (1997), Listening Awry (2006), and Strangest Thing (2014). He co-edited David Lewin's Morgengruß (2015), which received a Society for Music Theory citation. His work explores themes such as trauma, alterity, and the Real in music and digital media.
Teaching includes courses on music theory, semiotics, and video games' cultural dimensions. He has led workshops on Lacanian psychoanalysis, new media, and sound art. Administrative roles include Special Assistant to the Provost (2008–2009) and leadership in UNT’s College of Music committees.
