David Heinsen is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Theory at The Ohio State University, located in the Timashev Building. His research bridges music analysis with historical inquiry, focusing on Spanish concert music of the early 20th century and 21st-century flamenco fusion. He holds a PhD in Music Theory from the University of Texas at Austin (2023), an MA in Musicology from the University of Georgia (2017), a Master of Music in Euphonium Performance (2010), and a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music Education (2007). His work examines how composers engaged with vernacular genres like the fandango and pasodoble, linking these strategies to social, political, and racial discourses. He has presented at conferences in the U.S. and Spain and published in Bibliotheca Dantesca and Engaging Students.
Research interests include topic theory, musical semiotics, and pedagogical innovations in music education. His projects explore how historical listeners interpreted compositions and how contemporary schemata in flamenco fusion construct meaning for listeners familiar with traditional forms.
