David Areford is a Professor of Art History at the Art Department of UMass Boston, specializing in late-medieval and Northern Renaissance devotional art, early printmaking, and twentieth-century prints. He has authored and co-authored several influential publications and served as a Department Chair.

His research spans late-medieval European devotional art, early printmaking techniques, and modern print analysis—particularly the works of Sol LeWitt. He has received multiple grants and awards to support his curatorial projects.
His recent projects include the exhibition and catalog Strict Beauty: Sol LeWitt Prints and the edited collection Locating LeWitt: Between the Mind and the Body, alongside articles on fifteenth-century woodcuts and the Maulbronn Altarpiece.
