Professor David Andress of the University of Portsmouth is a leading historian specializing in the French Revolution (1760s–1840s) and broader European/Atlantic social conflicts. Affiliated with the Centre for European and International Studies Research, he has produced 43+ research outputs, including The Oxford Handbook of the French Revolution (2015) and The Routledge Handbook of French History (2024).
His research explores how pre-1789 French cultural norms interacted with revolutionary changes, focusing on emotions, trust, and identity narratives. He has held a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship (2021–24) to examine trust mechanisms in pre- and post-revolutionary France.
