David Ainsworth is an Associate Professor of English Literature and Assistant Chair in the Department of English at the University of Alabama. He is also a faculty member of the Hudson Strode Program for Renaissance Studies, housed at the university. His academic roles include serving as the first Communications Director of the Milton Society of America from 2013 to 2017. He holds a PhD in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2005).

Research Interests: Ainsworth specializes in Renaissance literature, particularly the works of John Milton, and digital humanities. His work explores themes such as spiritual reading in early modern texts, the intersection of music and theology in Milton’s poetry, and pedagogical strategies for undergraduate research. He has developed the Edifice Project to foster continuity in student work across semesters.
His publications reflect a focus on John Milton’s theological and literary contributions, digital humanities applications in education, and early modern literary analysis. Recent works include Milton, Music, and Literary Interpretation (2020), which examines musical metaphors in Milton’s writings, and articles on digital pedagogy and undergraduate research.
He is affiliated with the Hudson Strode Program for Renaissance Studies at the University of Alabama, contributing to its research initiatives and academic activities.
