David A. Willis is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Southern Methodist University (SMU). He specializes in laser-assisted microfabrication, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics, with a focus on applications in materials processing and biomedical engineering. His research involves experimental studies of laser ablation, microfluidics, and superhydrophobic surfaces. He holds a Ph.D. from Purdue University (2001), an M.S. from Purdue (1997), and a B.S. from North Carolina State University (1995).
- Education: PhD Mechanical Engineering (Purdue, 2001), MS (Purdue, 1997), BS (NC State, 1995)
- Research Interests: Laser micromachining, heat transfer, microfluidics, biomedical engineering
- Laboratory: Laser Micromachining Lab equipped with advanced laser systems and diagnostic tools
- Awards: ASME Fellow, Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor (2008–2010)
- Grants: NSF, Retina Foundation, Hewlett-Packard, and SMU Research Council
His work spans laser-based fabrication techniques, including laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) and pulsed laser ablation in liquids (PLAL), with applications in desalination and microdevice development. He advises graduate and undergraduate students in experimental and theoretical research projects.
