David A. Spiegel

David A. Spiegel, MD, is a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery affiliated with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He is actively engaged in global surgery, with extensive fieldwork in Nepal, Iraq, and Pakistan. He serves as an Honorary Professor at the University of Basra, Iraq, and has contributed to WHO initiatives in Mongolia and Somalia.

His research focuses on improving surgical access and quality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in pediatric orthopedics and musculoskeletal care. Key areas include the Ponseti method for clubfoot, surgical readiness assessments, and health systems strengthening. He co-edited the textbook Global Orthopaedics: Caring for Musculoskeletal Conditions and Injuries in Austere Settings and has delivered over 300 international lectures.

The recent publications highlight a strong trend in evaluating surgical access, injury distribution, and policy development in LMICs. His work frequently involves modeling healthcare delivery, identifying barriers to care, and advocating for global surgical equity, particularly in Africa and South Asia.

Dr. Spiegel has advised numerous global health scholars and trainees and has led or contributed to multiple research grants, particularly through WHO and academic collaborations. He has served on national committees such as POSNA and AAOS, focusing on global surgical education and service.

He is deeply involved with the Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre for Disabled Children in Nepal and contributes to the Global Initiative for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care. His work integrates clinical practice, research, policy, and education to advance global orthopedic care.
