David A. Bell is the Sidney and Ruth Lapidus Professor in the Era of North Atlantic Revolutions and a Professor of History at Princeton University. He previously taught at Yale University (1990–1996) and Johns Hopkins University (1996–2010), where he served as Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on early modern and modern European history, particularly the political culture of the Enlightenment, revolutionary France, nationalism, and the history of warfare. Bell has authored or co-edited numerous books, including Men on Horseback (2020), The First Total War (2007), and Napoleon: A Concise Biography (2015). He has held prestigious fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the American Council of Learned Societies, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the British Academy.
His current research project, The Opening of the Western Mind, re-examines the Enlightenment. He has also served as Director of the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies at Princeton. Bell’s work bridges academic and public history, with contributions to The New York Review of Books, The Guardian, and other outlets. He advises graduate students in topics related to French history and its empire, though he notes the high volume of applications limits individual consultations.
