Dasan Thamattoor serves as the J. Warren Merrill Professor in the Chemistry Department at Colby College, teaching core courses including Organic Chemistry II, Mechanistic Organic Chemistry, and Senior Seminar. His academic leadership includes serving as Department Chair and hosting the 2017 International Symposium on Reactive Intermediates and Unusual Molecules (ISRIUM) in Sorrento, Italy.
His educational journey began with a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Government Arts and Science College, Karwar, India, followed by an M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry from Karnatak University, Dharwad, India, and culminated in a Ph.D. from Princeton University. Postdoctoral research at the University of Notre Dame preceded his appointment at Colby.
Professor Thamattoor's research program centers on physical organic chemistry, with pioneering work in reactive intermediates, cage molecules, and photochemical reaction mechanisms. His innovative approach bridges experimental and computational methods to explore unusual molecular structures, significantly advancing understanding of transient species in organic reactions.
His scientific honors include the prestigious Fulbright Global Scholar award enabling collaborative research at Hiroshima University (2018), Masaryk University (2019), and Yale-NUS College (2020), alongside Colby's Charles Bassett Teaching Award recognizing exceptional pedagogy.
Mentoring over 80 Colby undergraduates and 50 high school students has produced numerous peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. His research program receives sustained support from the
- National Science Foundation
- Petroleum Research Fund (American Chemical Society)
- Research Corporation for Science Advancement
Professor Thamattoor maintains an active international research network, frequently involving students in overseas collaborations that exemplify Colby's global engagement mission.
