Dr Darryl Chalk is a Senior Lecturer (Theatre) and Program Coordinator at the University of Southern Queensland's School of Creative Arts. He holds a BA(Hons) and PhD from USQ (1995 and 2002 respectively). His research focuses on early modern literature, particularly Shakespearean drama, exploring themes like contagion, embodiment, and theatrical performance. He has supervised numerous doctoral students on topics ranging from Shakespeare's language to the intersections of climate and demonism in early modern plays.

His scholarship critically examines how plague imagery, sensory overload, and embodied imagination shape literary interpretation. Recent works include analyses of 'Love's Labour's Lost' and 'The Winter's Tale', focusing on whiteness, melancholia, and imaginative spectacle. He co-edited Contagion and the Shakespearean Stage (2019) and contributed to collections on sensory culture and early modern cognition.
As a supervisor, he guides doctoral research on topics such as the application of shamanism in creative processes and collaborative libretto writing. His academic contributions also include organizing conferences like the 2011 Shakespearean Reverie Symposium.
