Dr. Darren Williams is a Reader in Developmental Neurobiology at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). His research focuses on understanding how neural networks form during development, particularly in Drosophila, with an emphasis on dendritic morphogenesis and neuron pruning. He leads projects funded by the Leverhulme Trust and BBSRC, investigating mechanisms underlying neural circuit evolution and insulin signaling in neuron function.
Williams' research interests include the developmental origins of sensory neurons, the role of apoptosis in sculpting neural networks, and the molecular mechanisms governing synaptogenesis. Key collaborations involve institutions such as the National Institute of Genetics and the University of Washington.
His work has been recognized with the Winston Churchill Fellowship (2001). He has supervised multiple PhD students and contributed to seminal studies on Drosophila neurobiology, including defining nomenclature for the ventral nerve cord and uncovering ESCRT's role in neuron pruning.
