Darren Gergle is a Professor of Communication Studies and holds a courtesy appointment in Computer Science at Northwestern University. He is the John G. Searle Professor and Bao Family Professor of Human-Computer Interaction. He directs the CollabLab: The Laboratory for Collaborative Technology and co-founded the Center for Human-Computer Interaction + Design (HCI+D). His research focuses on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), and Social Computing, with emphasis on visual information's role in communication and applying social psychology to technology design.
Dr. Gergle has held roles including Director of Graduate Studies for the Technology and Social Behavior PhD program (2010-2020), Co-chair of the Faculty Research Council at the Segal Design Institute, and Fellow of the Communications Residential College. His work has earned awards such as the Best Paper Honorable Mention at CSCW 2019 and Best Paper Award at CHI 2018.
His research explores inclusive technologies, such as accessible collaboration tools for visually impaired users, and investigates social dynamics in crowdfunding, wearable camera systems, and organizational coordination. He leads efforts in designing context-aware systems and enhancing participatory sensing methodologies.
