Dr. Darren Blackshields serves as a Research Fellow at the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, University of Greenwich, where he has been a core member of the Fire Safety Engineering Group (FSEG) since 1999. His work centers on advanced evacuation modeling across diverse environments including buildings, aircraft, and maritime settings.
His primary research domains encompass:
- Computational evacuation dynamics
- Fire safety engineering systems
- Human behavior in emergency scenarios
- Toxic exposure modeling
- Aviation and maritime safety protocols
- Sports venue crowd management
Dr. Blackshields has secured major research funding from high-impact sources including the Royal Navy (CVF class aircraft carrier development), British Home Office (toxicity modeling), European Union frameworks (VELA, SAFEGUARD, AUGGMED), Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA counter-terrorism simulations), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA aviation projects), and Sports Ground Safety Authority (SGSA Green Guide modernization for women's football). He actively lectures on the internationally recognized Principles and Practice of Evacuation Modelling (PPEM) short course covering fire safety engineering and emergency human behavior analysis.
