Darrell Irvine is Professor and Vice-Chair of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research Institute. He holds a PhD in Polymer Science from MIT and completed postdoctoral training at Stanford. He previously served as Professor at MIT and Associate Director of the Koch Institute. His lab integrates immunology, biotechnology, and materials science to develop cancer immunotherapies and enhanced vaccines.
Research focuses on engineering immune responses using nanotechnology and biomaterials. Key areas include cancer immunotherapy, vaccine design for HIV and infectious diseases, nanoparticle-based drug delivery, and immune system modulation. His work bridges fundamental immunology with clinical applications.
Recent publications explore STING protein mechanisms, CAR T-cell therapies for heterogeneous tumors, and engineered immune cell technologies. Trends include molecular targeting, translational immunology, and interdisciplinary approaches.
- Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator (2008-present)
- Young Investigator Award, Beckman Foundation (2003)
- NIH MERIT Award (2021)
He founded Elicio Therapeutics, Strand Therapeutics, and Ankyra Therapeutics. His lab collaborates globally on infectious disease and cancer projects.
