Darrell Hudson

Darrell Hudson, PhD, MPH is the James S. Jackson Collegiate Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Behavior and Health Equity at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He previously served as Professor of Public Health at the Brown School, Washington University in St. Louis, and directed the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Equity there.

Dr. Hudson’s research focuses on eliminating racial/ethnic health inequities through studying social determinants of health, particularly racism, and its intersection with socioeconomic position, social mobility, and mental/physical health integration. His work employs a life course stress framework and spans depression, cognitive aging, diabetes, and structural racism.

Recent publications highlight his exploration of area deprivation, household energy insecurity, and structural determinants of diabetes and dementia outcomes. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and others.

Dr. Hudson is committed to training future researchers and advancing health equity through community engagement and antiracist research frameworks. His lab investigates the "health costs of upward mobility" and integration of mental/physical health care for marginalized populations.
