Darlene D. Francis is an Associate Professor of Public Health and Neuroscience at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research integrates biological, psychological, and social factors to understand health disparities and the mechanisms by which environmental and social conditions influence health outcomes. She examines how early-life experiences, particularly maternal care, shape lifelong stress responses and vulnerability to disease through epigenetic and neural mechanisms.
Francis holds a PhD in Neurological Sciences from McGill University (2000) and a BS in Biology and Psychology from Carleton University (1992). Her work emphasizes transdisciplinary collaboration, spanning molecular epigenetics to social epidemiology.
Her research highlights the bidirectional interaction between genes and environment, challenging traditional nature-nurture dichotomies. Key themes include developmental programming, stress biology, and social determinants of health. Her lab uses animal models to study maternal care effects on behavior, neuroendocrine systems, and inflammatory pathways, while also exploring societal-level interventions to reduce health inequalities.
Publications reveal a focus on maternal behavior, socioeconomic status, and inflammatory biomarkers. She teaches courses on biological embedding of social experiences and the neurobiology of stress. Francis advocates for interventions targeting early-life environments to mitigate health disparities.
