Dario Barberis is a researcher at the University of Lausanne (UNIL) affiliated with the Faculty of Theology and Religious Sciences. He is currently preparing his PhD thesis on identifying scribes' hands in Qumran manuscripts using deep learning, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (FNS) and supported by prior Erasmus Traineeship experiences.
- Education:
- Diplôme d’études classiques (Maturità Classica), 1996
- Licence in Letters (Lettere), University of Turin, 2014
- Master in Human Language and Literature (Lingue e Civiltà dell’Asia e dell’Africa), University of Turin, 2018
His research focuses on Hebrew paleography, computational analysis of ancient manuscripts, and digital humanities methodologies. He has pioneered the application of deep learning models to multispectral imaging of Qumran texts, bridging traditional scribal analysis with AI-driven pattern recognition.
Key collaborations include work with the Institut de recherche et d’histoire des textes (IRHT) in Paris, where he contributed to the digital edition of David Kimhi’s Sefer ha-Shorashim. His interdisciplinary approach combines manuscript philology, digital edition techniques, and text criticism.
- Scientific Contributions:
- Developed deep learning frameworks for scribal hand identification in Dead Sea Scrolls
- Advanced multispectral imaging analysis protocols for Hebrew paleography
- Integrated computational methods into traditional textual criticism workflows
