Darin Atwater is a visionary composer, conductor, and pianist who serves as Distinguished Visiting Faculty at The Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute, where he co-launched the American Roots Division. He is Founder and Artistic Director of Soulful Symphony, an 85-member orchestra with vocals composed predominantly of African American and Latino musicians.
Atwater's research and creative interests center on American music traditions, specifically exploring the intersections of classical, jazz, gospel, soul, and hip-hop. His work redefines the boundaries of American music through cultural truth, spiritual depth, and sonic innovation, blending orchestral complexity with Black cultural narratives.
His major compositions include Black Metropolis: A Ballad Opera (2023), South Side: Symphonic Dances (2018), and the Emmy-winning Song In A Strange Land. These works demonstrate his ability to create purely musical experiences that convey complex narratives about the African American experience without relying on extra-musical elements.
- Emmy Award for Song In a Strange Land
- Prestige Award from the state of Maryland
- Key to the City of Baltimore
Atwater serves as Artistic Director of the Monterey Jazz Festival (becoming the first African American in this role in the festival's 65-year history) and is a United Nations Cultural Ambassador who co-leads 'Elevating Voices within the African Borderlands.' His leadership approach combines narrative coherence, cultural depth, and artist-centered thinking to honor legacy while defining the future of American music.
As founder of Soulful Symphony, Atwater has created an ensemble that celebrates, elevates, and reimagines American music and culture, contributing significantly to the canon of American Roots music through innovative programming and groundbreaking performances at venues including the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian, and Lincoln Center.
