Dr. Daolun Chen is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Mechatronics Engineering at Toronto Metropolitan University, where he conducts research and teaches in advanced materials science. He holds a Dr.rer.nat. from the University of Vienna, a PhD from the Institute of Metal Research (Chinese Academy of Sciences), and MSc and BSc degrees from Northeastern University, China.
His research focuses on lightweight, high-strength materials such as magnesium and aluminum alloys, with emphasis on mechanical properties, deformation, fatigue, fracture, microstructural characterization, and welding. His work supports sustainable manufacturing by enabling lighter vehicles and aircraft, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
The recent publications highlight a consistent focus on deformation mechanisms, microstructure evolution, and high-performance alloys, particularly in titanium aluminides, magnesium, and nanocomposites. His research bridges fundamental materials science with industrial applications.

Dr. Chen is actively engaged in academic service, serving as associate editor or editorial board member for 28 journals, including Materials Research Letters, Materials and Design, and Materials Science and Engineering A. He supervises graduate students and leads the Mechanical Behaviour of Materials research group, focusing on reliability, safety, and environmental responsibility in engineering materials.
His lab investigates residual stresses, nanocomposites, and high-temperature oxidation, with strong industrial and international collaborations across Canada, China, Austria, Brazil, India, Japan, and the U.S.
