Danny Wilson

Dr. Danny Wilson is an Externally-Funded Research Fellow (C) at the University of Adelaide, affiliated with the School of Biological Sciences within the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology. His research focuses on understanding the unique biology of single-cell parasites like malaria (Plasmodium spp.) and Toxoplasma gondii, aiming to develop novel vaccines and drug treatments. He has secured significant grants and fellowships, including the NHMRC Peter Doherty Early Career Fellowship and multiple DAAD/Universities Australia-Germany collaborations.

His work employs advanced techniques such as gene editing, fluorescence microscopy, and proteomic analysis to study parasite invasion mechanisms and identify therapeutic targets. The lab also investigates the efficacy of azithromycin analogues and other small molecules against malaria and Toxoplasma, with a focus on overcoming drug resistance.

Dr. Wilson has been awarded several prestigious fellowships, including the Hospital Research Foundation Mid-career Fellowship and the University of Adelaide Beacon Fellowship. These accolades reflect his contributions to malaria research and drug development.

In terms of grants and funding, he has served as Chief Investigator (CIA), Lead-CI, or Co-CI on projects from NHMRC, ARC, DAAD/Universities Australia-Germany, and the South Australian Sheep Industry Fund. His research has also been supported through collaborations with international institutions and industry partners.

Dr. Wilson is actively involved in teaching, including lectures on Infection and Immunity A, Biomedical Science, and mentoring undergraduate students. He is eligible to supervise Masters and PhD students, fostering the next generation of researchers in malaria and parasitology.

His laboratory is equipped with advanced microscopy systems, such as the Oxford Nano-imager NIM 4 and Imaris software, enabling cutting-edge analysis of parasite biology. These tools are critical for his work in mapping subcellular structures and identifying drug targets.
