Danielle Vahala serves as a Scientific Officer within Research Infrastructure Platforms and as a Casual Teaching Tutor at the University of Western Australia, where she contributes to both research and medical education. Her dual roles support cutting-edge biomaterials research while providing instructional leadership across multiple medical and human sciences courses.
Her educational background includes a First-Class Honours Bachelor of Science with double majors in Anatomy & Human Biology and Physiology from UWA (2017-2020), followed by ongoing doctoral studies in Human Sciences (March 2021-September 2025). Danielle's research focuses on cellular plasticity and mechanosensation, development of biomimetic biomaterials, and 3D visualization and characterization of cells. Her work bridges engineering principles with cancer biology to create advanced experimental platforms that mimic native tissue environments.
Danielle's publications reveal a strong emphasis on understanding how mechanical properties of the tumor microenvironment influence cancer progression. Her research employs innovative hydrogel systems, including a fragmented granular GelMA hydrogel she developed that better mimics interstitial spaces in native tissues. Her work also explores the Adherent-To-Suspension transition (AST) as a novel paradigm in metastasis.

Danielle has received significant research support through the Australian Government's Research Training Program, National Breast Cancer Foundation travel award, and UWA's BioZone. Her international collaborations include work at the National University of Singapore where she learned block-co-polymer micelle lithography (BCML) techniques to modify ligand spacing at the nano level. She teaches across multiple medical courses including Cells, Tissues and Development (ANHB3323), Applications and Investigations series, and Integrated Medicine programs for both first and second-year students.
