Danielle V. Schoon is a Senior Lecturer at The Ohio State University (OSU), affiliated with the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, Sociology, Dance, and other departments. She has held this position since 2015 and is also a COIL Fellow in the Office of International Affairs. Her research focuses on Turkish and Romani studies, performance, and ethnography, with a particular emphasis on urban renewal, minority identities, and public performance in Istanbul.
Education includes a PhD in Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Arizona and an MA in Dance Studies from UCLA. She advocates for active learning and community engagement, incorporating innovative pedagogical strategies in both in-person and online settings.
Teaching highlights include courses on Turkish culture, politics, and migration studies. She received the Outstanding Lecturer Award in Sociology (2021) and has secured grants from the Drake Institute, Office of International Affairs, and others for course design, professional development, and research. Notably, she co-organized the 2021 virtual symposium Bringing the Border to Columbus and is developing a Virtual Education Abroad program in Istanbul focusing on global competence and intercultural exchange.
Her work bridges academic rigor with practical application, emphasizing cross-cultural collaboration through initiatives like Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). This approach fosters student engagement with global challenges such as diversity, equity, and inclusion.
