Danielle H. Speller is an Assistant Professor of Physics at Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy, part of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. She leads the Speller Lab, focused on experimental particle and nuclear astrophysics, particularly cryogenic searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, including dark matter detection and neutrino studies. Her work involves collaborations with major experiments: CUORE (neutrinoless double-beta decay), CUPID (next-gen CUORE upgrade), and HAYSTAC (axion dark matter). She holds a PhD from UC Berkeley and joined JHU in 2020 after postdoctoral research at Yale's Maruyama Lab.
Speller's research explores fundamental questions about matter's nature, such as neutrino mass origins and dark matter composition. Her lab develops advanced cryogenic detectors and quantum sensing tools. Notable achievements include the 2022 Packard Fellowship and 2021 APS Stuart Jay Freedman Award. She teaches undergraduate courses in electricity and magnetism and mentors students through advising roles. The lab actively recruits postdoctoral fellows and hosts undergraduate researchers.
Recent projects include optimizing CUPID detectors, analyzing CUORE data for dark matter constraints, and advancing HAYSTAC's axion search.
