Danielle Dutton

Danielle Dutton is a Professor of English at Washington University in St. Louis and Co-Director of the Center for the Literary Arts. She holds a PhD from the University of Denver, an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a BA from UC Santa Cruz. Her work bridges creative writing and literary criticism, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. Dutton co-founded the feminist press Dorothy, a publishing project, which has championed innovative writers like Renee Gladman and Cristina Rivera Garza. Her research interests include experimental fiction, independent publishing, and the intersection of text and visual art.

Recent courses include Fictions of the Anthropocene, exploring environmental crises through narrative and poetic forms. Awards include the 2024 Excellence in Teaching Award and the 2020 Golden Colophon Award for her work with Dorothy Press. Her publications span novels, essays, and hybrid works, including Prairie, Dresses, Art, Other (2024) and Margaret the First (2016). She has also contributed to The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and Harper’s.
