Danielle Charette is an Assistant Professor of Politics in the general faculty and Associate Director of the Program on Constitutionalism and Democracy at the University of Virginia. She holds a B.A. in English Literature from Swarthmore College (2014) and completed her Ph.D. with the dissertation "David Hume's Imperfect Commonwealth" (2021). Her research focuses on civic republicanism, the Scottish Enlightenment, and eighteenth-century debates over globalization, examining their legacies for contemporary understandings of liberty, political economy, and the nation-state.
Her work appears in prestigious journals such as the American Political Science Review, Political Studies, and Political Theory, alongside contributions to edited volumes. She also engages in public scholarship through outlets like The Chronicle of Higher Education and The LA Review of Books. Her teaching spans American political thought and early modern republicanism, with a focus on integrating literature and political theory.
Charette serves as an editor for American Political Thought's book reviews and co-edited the blog Tocqueville21 during graduate studies. Her academic contributions bridge historical political thought and contemporary debates about governance and globalization.
